Plant Propagation is how we make new
plants. We can do it by planting
seeds. We can also do it by using part
of a plant that is already growing.
First we will learn about planting seeds. Then we will learn other ways to start new
plants.
In nature, plants can replant
themselves. Seeds may drop on the ground
and start to grow. Sometimes people get the seeds stuck to their clothes, or
animals get the seeds stuck in their fur. The seeds may drop on the ground and start to
grow. Sometimes animals eat the seeds,
when they go to the bathroom the seeds may start to grow again in a new place.
How to Grow Plants
from Seeds
Before you begin, read the package. The package will tell you if you should plant the seed outside or start it in a pot.
It will tell you how deep to plant the seeds
and when to plant the seeds. It will tell you how long it takes to grow.
Seeds come in all shapes and sizes.
Some plants grow from seeds. Some grow from bulbs or rhizomes.

These are tulip bulbs. Look at the roots that grow out of the bulbs.
If you want to plant seeds in pots,
these are the things you will need.
·
Potting soil or
seed starting mix.
·
Pots, seed
starting trays, or planting pellets. You
can even make your own pots.
·
Packets of seeds.
·
Some thing to
scoop the soil with.
Other Ways to
Start New Plants
· You can start new plants by cutting a leaf or branch. Put it in water until it begins to grow a root. Then plant it in soil. Sometime you can even use part of a leaf
